Intern Intros - Meet Gina!

No comments:
Throughout the summer, we will be introducing you to our fabulous interns. Enjoy the first in this series of posts.

I’m Gina, the first marketing intern for the Auditorium Theatre. I have just completed my first week and I must say it is a great experience. Many times when you think “intern” you think of what they show in the movies, someone they make run all over the place doing pointless things, like coffee runs for the staff. I am happy and thankful to say that I do not even know who drinks coffee here, so needless to say I am not doing any coffee runs.
I am currently a graduate student at Purdue Calumet studying Communication. I studied Communication and Advertising in my undergraduate at Eastern Illinois University. I am very happy to be working in the city of Chicago because my hope is to move here sometime in 2012. I absolutely love the city and all it has to offer and I am happy to say that this internship is helping me enjoy the city even more, especially when I was able to see The Beach Boys concert with John Stamos! It was great to see “Uncle Jessie,” and my sister and I had a great time.
For some time now I have wanted to explore every aspect of the communication field; when I received the email that I was accepted as an intern here I was ecstatic. I have always loved going to see performances and I know this is a great fit for me. I am hoping to learn as much as possible. So far I can say that the people are great and make me laugh on a daily basis! I am very excited to share my experience when I write my second blog near the end of the internship.

Music for Miles and Miles

No comments:
The city is alive with the sound of music! If you work downtown, you’ll get a special serenade this morning. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., trumpeters will be on several street corners playing Miles Davis tunes. Why, you might ask? To celebrate the announcement of the Auditorium Theatre’s Miles Davis Festival, of course. Take a picture of one of the trumpeters and post it to our Facebook page or tweet it to us @AuditoriumChgo and you’ll get a special discount off Festival programming.

Want to know where to find them? (You didn't think we'd make you go on a scavenger hunt in this weather, did you?!)

Photo of the day - balloon launch

    No comments:

On Wednesday, our Hands Together, Heart to Art campers wrote messages to the parents they had lost and tied them to balloons. The campers and counselors then walked to Buckingham Fountain, where the campers released their messages.

If Louis and Dankmar could see us now!

    No comments:

For the month of July, our lobby is the lunchroom for hungry campers and their counselors and teaching artists!

Hands Together, Heart to Art, our performing arts day camp designed especially for children who have experienced the death of a parent, is in full swing. This session features 40 campers ages 7-11. These energetic kids are dancing, acting, singing and preparing for their final performance, sure to be a treat. Along the way, they are talking with adults who also lost parents as children and making new friends.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is generously providing our campers with balanced, nutritious lunches - which they are enjoying in what might be the only camp cafeteria designed by Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan!

Blast From The Past - Bowling at the Auditorium

    No comments:

This is one of our favorite historic photos of the Auditorium!

During World War II, the Auditorium was converted into a servicemen's center, complete with bowling alley on the stage.

    Friday Afternoon Wiffle Ball

    No comments:
In January, 1891, the Newsboys and Bootblacks Association played the first indoor softball game in Louis Sullivan and Adler Dankmark's greatest achievement, the Auditorium Theatre. The stage was extended through platforming out over the orchestra seats (the same configuration was also used for charity balls) and spectators sat in the boxes and balcony.

This past Friday, there was no stage extention, there were no spectators - but there was wiffle ball! Dankmark's Dudes defeated Louis's Lushes 11-8.

These pics were taken with a cell phone, so the quality isn't the best, but enjoy!

Work study student Susan Urasky is up at bat, while Operations Manager Steve Sell plays catcher.

Margaret Garner project manager Gail Kalver cheers on the players.

Marketing Manager Megan Flanagan proudly cheers on the team (quote from C.J. Dillon, House Manager: "A knocked-up cheerleader? This is just like high school!), while Patron Services Coordinator Annie Slaughter hides behind her pompoms.

Photos - State Ballet of Georgia

    No comments:
For the most part, we've been using this picture of Nina Ananiashvili in Don Quixote to promote the March 5-9 engagement by the State Ballet of Georgia:

We love this picture, but in addition to performing Don Q three times, the company will also perform an evening of mixed rep on March 7, with pieces by Balanchine (a native of Georgia), Possokhov and Ratmansky. So here are a few more pics:
