“Arden Court” - Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater [Video]

For the first time, the Ailey dancers will perform a work by the modern American genius Paul Taylor. Set to William Boyce’s sumptuous baroque score, this romantic masterpiece has been hailed by The New York Times for “the irresistible pleasure of its dancing.”

Company member Kirven James Boyd has literally jumped into the spotlight this year as the featured dancer on Ailey’s 2011-12 season poster in a pose from the “Sinner Man” section of Mr. Ailey’s Revelations.

“Right now we're rehearsing Arden Court by Paul Taylor and Home by Rennie Harris, both of which are premieres for the Company. This experience is one of many reasons why I wanted to be a part of Ailey. We get to work with so many choreographers; it challenges us to forget what we know and become something different. If we fully commit to that, then we learn a great deal about ourselves as artists and people.

I really love the musicality of Arden Court, which we rehearse in the early afternoon. The Taylor style of modern dance is challenging because there's a lot of movement and a lot of freedom, but there are also lots of specifics within the shapes in which we're asked to move.”
